Hello. I've been lurking for a while, my first post here. I'm an amateur photographer and a taphophile. It is very nice to find a community with many talented photographers that concentrates on just what I like, old cemeteries, places with history of their own, where it does not smell of fresh pain and rotten meat, where time flows like thick honey. Without posing goth chics.

This set is from the Novodevichye Cemetery in St.Petersburg, Russia. The cemetery was established in the 17th century around the Novodevichiy Monastery and was active until 1930's, now it is oficially closed. In the 18th and 19th centuries it was a place of prestige, where the wealthy and the noble were buried. The great painter Vrubel, writers Tyutchev and Nekrasov, among others. There are very many gorgeous tombs and gravestones, of which the majority are in an awfully sad state.

This bizarre formation was to be found in the tomb above

This (or worse) is how the majority of the tombs look like

A shame that I used BW film, since the Jesus head had its authentic colours left

Wow, place of prestige indeed! I can only imagine how gorgeous this must have been when the cemetery was being taken care of. Number 4 and 5 are my favorites. The tomb looks like a little church. It's really a shame that such a beautiful cemetery is falling to pieces.

Yeah, and the shots I did were only a small part of the gorgeousness. It's a real shame, though it is very pretty (perhaps prettier) as abandoned, too. Hopefully the city's authoroties will do something about it before it'll fall apart completely, since may famous peple are buried there.

These are amazing. If I ever make it to Russia (it's one country I really want to see) I'd definitely like to see this graveyard. St Petersburg is a city I've always wanted to visit. Thanks for posting these.

Thank you. St. Petersburg (my original hometown) is special and is definitely worth a visit. If there's anything you want to know about the city or it's cemeteries - you're welcome to ask.
